A Sincere Plea – PBA Website Total Fail

Now that a worthy TV partner has finally snagged the broadcast rights to the Philippine Basketball Association, I can only hope and pray that the PBA finds the decency to overhaul their pathetic excuse for a website. How bad is it? Anytime you litter the website of Asia’s longest running pay-for-play league with Adsense, you know there is something wrong. More crap here and here. It is that bad.

Give the site to Solar Entertainment? The BTV site also needs a lot of work, but at least it doesn’t look like it was designed on Microsoft Word. In fairness to their capabilities, aside from a few articles by some notable people in Solar Sports, it’s obvious that the site’s main function is to provide programming schedules only.

Judging from their coverage of the PBA draft, I am very optimistic that it’s only a matter of time before they do a People’s elbow on the league’s official website.

Online Advertising — Where do you draw the line?

As one of my former bosses used to say, “There’s nothing impossible on the Internet. All you need are the right people and enough resources.” As proven by Nokia in their current Pinoyexchange ad, they obviously have a lot of both.

In today’s world of Friendster Facebook pages, Blogspot diaries, and Multiply accounts, at what point do you say no to an advertiser?

If this particular execution was being carried out by a personal blog, I would understand. But for Pinoyexchange to allow their site to be defaced by a single advertiser? I don’t know how much exactly Nokia paid for this, but c’mon, I’ve always thought Pinoyexchange was better (and definitely bigger) than that.

While Internet advertising is still in its infancy in the Philippines, I’ll make it a point to do my part (through this blog) in ridding the online space of this already vicious cycle. Expect me to blow the whistle in future posts.

The Miracle that is Men’s Health Philippines

This day last week, me and a few friends participated in the Men’s Health Miracle Run (my influence obviously). You see, if there’s one other lesson I’ve learned from my stint as publisher of Men’s Health, it’s that you can never be too paranoid when it comes to your health.

To a lot of people, it may seem boring blah blah blah… or the whole health is wealth thing is overrated. But if you think about it even more, do you really want to worry about your health several years down the line?

Not all doctors look like Meredith Grey, unfortunately.

A Bright (and sparkly) Future for Print Media

Literally. Well, for Esquire at least.

The September* issue of will have an e-ink cover. 100,000 of the total 720,000 print run will be assembled by hand, with parts criss-crossing the globe before ending up newsstands, jumping out at your eyes with shifting images.

Link to full news item here.

While obviously another way to go when it comes to standing out on the newsstand, we just have to wonder if such a move is just a way for the print industry to desperately cope with the fast changing times. As the business model for magazines in the US is more geared towards subscription than newsstand sales, there is really no need for publishing companies to stick their necks out for the price of evolution.

Of course, locally, it’s an entirely different story. Continue reading

Chris Brown live in Manila this coming October

After Neyo, Alicia Keys, and a few other recording superstars, seems like these foreign artists aren’t done with Manila yet. According to an officemate, there’s an ad in the paper today saying Rihanna’s squeeze Chris Brown is coming to Manila. I still would have wanted to see Usher, Justin, or Madonna, but Chris Brown is more than good enough.

Here’s hoping Rihanna tags along. And “dance forever ever ever…”. I listen to the song going to work every friggin’ day! What are the ticket prices?

Miriam Quiambao in Playboy Philippines

The August issue of Playboy Philippines greets us with Miriam Quiambao on the cover. Though I’ve always believed that there is absolutely no way for a magazine to change overnight, Playboy has finally taken the first steps towards meaningful (and necessary) change by getting rid of Beting Laygo Dolor. Good riddance.

Here are a few things about the cover.

Gabe Norwood is a Filipino

Or so the DOJ says.

“Accordingly, having been born on February 9, 1985, of a Filipino mother makes Gabriel Daniel Norwood, a Filipino citizen under Sec. 1(2) of Article 3 of the 1973 Constitution which declares as citizens of the Philippines those whose fathers or mothers are citizens of the Philippines at the time of their birth,” he said.

Full article can be found here.

Gabe Norwood is a FilipinoMy opinion? After making him play in an Olympic qualifying tournament as a Pinoy a few months back, this was the only way to go. After settling on Devance by default in a very lean 2007 PBA draft, Norwood may very well be the franchise player Welcoat is looking for.

For the PBA’s sake (and their own) though, I hope the Welcoat management makes an extra effort to surround him with all the support he needs. I’d sure hate to see that 4-position versatility go to waste.

Rogue Magazine’s “Rogue” Joey Mead Cover

I know this is 2 months overdue, but I just had to say something about this magnificent cover. It seems that Rogue caused quite an outrage when they painted the Philippine flag on Joey Mead’s body.

My take on the cover — this particular cover was done tastefully in my opinion. And no, I don’t think the people behind Rogue had intentions of desecrating our Philippine flag.

What 12 Straight Wins can do for the PBA

Ginebra vs Air21

A fitting way to end their stint on ABC5.

With a few days left before Air21 feels how it is to step on the court for the PBA Finals, Ginebra fans everywhere can only cringe. The team’s last few games against the Express haven’t really turned out the way they would want them to.

Ginebra may well be facing the only team that can keep up with the fast, furious, fearless, and whoever F they want to throw out there. Though it’s obvious who I want to win, I’ve also learned to appreciate a good series when I see one.

My only wish? For Alex Crisano and Homer Se to do their respective WWE impressions. Kidding aside, I just want to see some high scoring basketball games. The whole defense wins championships thing is overrated.

On a more serious note, does anyone know where I can get tickets?

My Pending Blogposts Folder + Cameron Diaz

I have this “Pending Blogposts” folder on my desktop. When I see something I’d want to share my thoughts on, I just dump it in the thing. Man, I’ve sure got a lot of catching up to do. Because of work and my FHM sports blog, I’ve mildly neglected JustAnotherGame. Hopefully, my post frequency can go back to about 2-3 posts per week. Hopefully.

Anyway, one thing I loved doing when I was still working in Summit was to comment on magazine covers. You’d be surprised at the number of tweaks/innovations/changes (or whatever you want to call them) magazines do in order to “stand out”.

So here goes. I’ll be following no specific formula. You’ll be seeing much more of posts like this in the future.

Cameron Diaz May 2008 GQ Cover

The reason why I took special attention to this cover is quite simple — the concept of the shoot itself.

Guy 1: Oh, let’s get Cameron to pose in a 2-piece bikini on top of some building in Los Angeles.

Guy 2: Er, why are we going to do that?

Guy 1: Because it’ll sell no matter what.

Guy 2: Rrrriiitteee.

The magazine has no cover lines, and yet, you know the magazine is enough to warrant a pick up. Though Cameron’s picture isn’t as engaging as let’s say, a shot with her looking straight into the lens, the pose exudes a “I’m hot and I know it. Now, down on your knees” type of sexiness. Her lines are all well accentuated against the backdrop of the city.

They still used sex as a draw-in, but execution was done in a very, very classy way.
