May 8, Friday, a non-working holiday because of Pacquiao?

Yep, call this a link bait if you must. And although I’m open to the idea of having this coming Friday, May 8, declared a holiday, I’m against having Manny Pacquiao’s win as the main reason to do so. I can’t find the official announcement anywhere, but I did find this site that lists all available public holidays throughout the world. It cites the Philippine Star as a source, but I can’t seem to find the link to that news item either.

Sources: The Philippine Star (Manila) and Philippines bank and public holidays (qppstudio.net). In a GMA-7 interview, today, Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao announced that he had received a personal telephone call from Philippines’ President Arroyo (PGMA), who told him that Friday, May 8, 2009, the day he arrives in Manila, had been declared a non-working public holiday.

If the Philippine government wants to get on the good side of the public, they should just shoulder his television rights, and not make the business sector shoulder the burden. While other countries are having economic troubles and flu scares, the Philippines is celebrating because of a boxing match?

I hope all of this is just a big joke.

My KFC Zinger is made out of bread crumbs.

The old KFC Zinger

Lucban Longganisa. Those are the two words that always come out of my mouth when I talk about the food that I miss the most. Specially when they’re toasted to a crisp with bits and pieces falling off. Oh so… bad for the heart. LOL.

When I made a commitment more than a year ago, I also told myself one thing — that there’s no way in hell I’m giving up my KFC chicken. The whole taking-off-the-skin-and-eating-it-last ritual, oh yeah, I do that too. Which is why it pains me to write something like this about my beloved Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I have two things to rant about.

The Man from Manila

I had just finished watching a downloaded copy of Greys Anatomy earlier today when I found out that Francis M had passed away. Though I’m not what you would call a big fan, his Mga Kababayan album was the very first cassete tape that I bought. I remember the year distinctly because 5 out of the 12 sections we had in 4th grade chose the title song for their class night presentation (back then we still had those).

His name would usually come up in random conversations with my kuya. Why? His face was never one that needed the magic touch of a Belo or Calayan. I think I even remember my brother saying that if he aged as well as Francis M, he wouldn’t mind reaching 50 at all.

And have you seen the guy’s videogame collection? OMG. The Nintendo 64 hadn’t even reached our shores, but I caught him on TV being featured because of his videogame collection. When GamesMaster was still being published, I had tried to push for the guy to be featured. I did that not just because of the videogames.

Francis M represented, insipired, and spawned a generation of music and country loving Pinoys. Peace out man, you will surely be missed.

Chris Brown live in Manila this coming October

After Neyo, Alicia Keys, and a few other recording superstars, seems like these foreign artists aren’t done with Manila yet. According to an officemate, there’s an ad in the paper today saying Rihanna’s squeeze Chris Brown is coming to Manila. I still would have wanted to see Usher, Justin, or Madonna, but Chris Brown is more than good enough.

Here’s hoping Rihanna tags along. And “dance forever ever ever…”. I listen to the song going to work every friggin’ day! What are the ticket prices?

Beauty and the Beast

Was just reading through Pep.ph today and came across this news item. It’s living proof that every guy out there has a fighting chance. His face reeks of uber cuteness most definitely. Lol. What an ugl… okay i’ll stop now.

Goodbye Robinsons Galleria Summit Media Office

My first interview at Summit was way back in ’03 when they were still in Pioneer. Though the office resembled an old warehouse back then, it still felt like home to the talented minds who were there from the very beginning. Think no Internet and people sharing computers. From a lone magazine to twenty-five in a decade — the accomplishment is nothing short of amazing.

If there’s one thing sadder than leaving your former office, it’s realizing you need just one more look at it before they start tearing everything down. It was almost 5PM when a former officemate told me they were almost done packing.

Here’s how the office looked last Friday. *sniff*

Summit Robinson’s Galleria Office

If you’ve never been inside the Galleria Summit office, you should know there weren’t any windows. Regardless if the sky was falling Galleria ceilings were leaking, natural calamities were not enough to postpone photoshoots. Even if smoke from the food court found its way into the office during lunch, this did not stop people from meeting all those unreasonable tight production deadlines (Peace Intet :) ). Even the exposed pipes overhead were used as runways for the occasional rat race. Believe it or not, all of these things were not inconveniences.

I just picked up the June issue of Men’s Health yesterday, and saw a familiar name on page 50 (name not worth mentioning, nor will I even bother linking to the actual posts). Needless to say, I would have been against the feature if I was still working there. Below are a few posts from the guy’s blog.

“And if this methane-gases-due-to-human-waste theory proves itself to be true, considering that this is Ayala Malls, the country’s supposedly most prestigious real estate development corporation that supposedly prioritizes issues such as these, can you imagine what the sewage system of less “prestigious” developments might look like? Just think about what horrors lurk underneath MegaMall or worse, Robinson’s Malate and Galleria. People of Summit Media, you know what I’m talking about. The underground parking lot of your offices in Galleria really are Dante’s seven levels of hell. And I’m already being kind.”

Here’s one more…

First of all, the construction materials you use for them (specifically Robinson’s Place and Galleria) are alarmingly substandard. It only takes one look at the crumbling parking ramps of Robinson’s Place, the cracks on the concrete walls, and the greasy stinky sweatshop conditions of Summit Media in Galleria to make one wonder how much you scrimped in order to keep your profit margin up.”

Much like what was said about the old Pioneer office, these are the small things you look back to when thinking about how big a company has become. People may have come and gone, but the fact still remains — people worked their asses off regardless of what the office was like.

Here’s to the new Summit Office! My message to the guy above? Dante’s seven levels of hell now has windows. :)

DJ Tiesto Live in Manila 2008

DJ Tiesto Live in Manila 2008

First, let me get it out of the way and say that I love going to these kinds of events. Aside from the music, the whole concept of people watching is very appealing to me (and my friends). Imagine all the women dressed up in their most revealing comfortable get ups and getting drunk crazy on the dance floor. I’ve also had my fair share of warehouse and rave parties in the past (they don’t all em’ that anymore) when I was still in school. I didn’t mind elbow to elbow crowds either.

While I enjoy these big parties, one thing I absolutely abhor is the certain air of exclusivity that is associated with these kinds of events. Last night’s DJ Tiesto Elements of Life event at the World Trade Center was no different.

Farewell Aling Lucing

aling-lucing-sisig.jpg

Though I did not know Aling Lucing personally, I can’t help but feel sad about what happened. To those who haven’t tried Aling Lucing’s sisig, the one hour drive to Angeles is well worth it. Though I’ve given up on beef and pork, I think it’s safe to say my first taste of her sisig was a life changing experience. Seriously.

Farewell Aling Lucing. May your sisig reciple will live through the ages.

Shining Star by Get Far

Just can’t get enough of this song right now. Seeing the video however, brought the excitement level down a notch. :P

This other version, though sung by a mainstream local artist, is a pretty good effort IMO.

A Better Ending: I am Legend

iamlegend-poster2.jpgI don’t remember when I am Legend came out. All I remember is how much I regretted watching it. All I saw was an explosive display of er, explosives. Anyway, someone from the office showed me an alternate ending. You can also watch it here. Way better methinks.

You didn’t think a movie with such a kickass poster would suck bigtime right? I guess it’s a marketing tactic so people would buy the DVD :P
