Even Newspapers Must Evolve

Philippine Daily Inquirer 2008Even though it’s easy to identify the country’s main dailies because of the distinct color schemes of each masthead, incorporating layout changes can prove to be a bit**. Everyone still has to stick to a generally grayscale theme. Even with this “dullness”, the fact still remains — that advertising in newspapers in the Philippines is still the fastest way of reaching the broadest audience, at the least amount of time.

I was sitting inside a coffee shop last week when I saw the latest issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The first page of the newspaper is the image you see on the left. It got me to think, design wise, there’s a reason why they’re #1.

They’re the country’s leading daily simply because they chose to evolve. I found this site that documents all the changes that have happened to the Inquirer’s front page since 1985.

Mark Burnett’s Survivor being shot in Camarines Sur?

If rumors are true, then a Pinay video blogger’s efforts can’t possibly compare with the PR Mark Burnett’s Survivor will generate for Philippine tourism. Yes, Survivor might be filming in Camarines Sur islands as you are reading this.

Ngunit nitong nakaraang Holy Week, tourists and even local vacationers—including some celebrities—at pati na rin ang ibang mga mismong taga-Gota Beach sa Agirangan Island na part ng Caramoan Peninsula sa Camarines Sur were not allowed to enter the said beach resort to do their Semana Santa vacation. Doon daw kasi nagsu-shooting ang next season ng Survivor.

Full article can be found here.

Though it started the reality trend on television, Survivor has somehow lost its luster over the past few years. Just another case of same old same old? Maybe so. I guess the people of Camsur should just be glad that the show lasted this long. Hope they don’t jack up their prices though.

*To those who are part of event management groups, don’t you ever wonder how hard it is to keep something of this magnitude under wraps? :)

*Not long ago, the Philippines was one of the pitstops in The Amazing Race.

PBA to transfer to Studio 23?

PBA on Studio 23

Rumors are circulating that the Philippine Basketball Association may soon find a new home in Studio 23. According to my source, the PBA was no longer happy with ABC 5, and that the transfer is 90% sure to push through. The transfer however, may not happen until after the coming conference.

What implications will this have on the country’s premier pay to play league?

When Editorial Integrity is Thrown Out the Window

Jennelyn MercadoUnless you’re talking about some porn mag, there’s just no way a magazine will survive without advertising in the Philippines. Though our land is home to the best writers and photographers in the world, that’s just how it is. Another challenge for magazines is how to make their content fresh and dynamic enough to warrant a monthly purchase. P100-P125 for a magazine can be quite a stretch for the typical C market reader.

To put it simply, a magazine doesn’t rank high on a need scale at all.

Who is Shawn Yao and the Rogue Magazine Mystery

KC-Concepcion-Rogue-Magazine-CoverIf you love browsing magazines, then you’ve probably picked up and looked at KC Concepcion’s Rogue Magazine cover. No doubt about it, the Megastar’s daughter is destined for stardom. She doesn’t just qualify as eye candy, she’s one helluva’ talented woman as well. How can someone be so perfect?

These reasons though, aren’t why you can no longer find a KC Concepcion Rogue Magazine issue on the newsstands (you can check out the pics here).

Anytime a magazine sells out at least 85% of its monthly print run, you can expect good returns on your monthly investment.

WHAT IF, someone just suddenly decides to purchase all available copies? This strategy was actually explored when a famous men’s magazine launched a year or two ago. While this move would have prevented the title from making a big splash in the magazine market (by preventing it from falling into the hands of potential repeat purchasers), it would definitely raise the public’s curiosity. Anyone remember the infamous Diana Zubiri shoot on Edsa? Any red-blooded male would.

I’m not familiar with Rogue’s true circulation, but whispers from publishing circles indicate that a family (with family name Yao) has indeed bought every available Rogue Magazine out there.

Want to find out why?

On Niche Markets and Society Magazines

By definition, a niche market is a focused targetable portion of a market sector. Niche marketing, in turn, is any attempt to provide a product or service that is not being addressed by mainstream providers. This new demand arises whenever there are changes to society, technology, or the general environment.

If there’s a magazine company out there worth noting when it comes to this, it would have to be Hinge Inquirer Publications.

On Philippine/Pinoy Idol

American Idol Stage

As much as I wanted ABC 5′s attempt to establish itself as one of the “big boys” to succeed (someone really needs to put the two giant networks in their place), things didn’t quite work out the way they wanted it to. One question they should asked themselves from the beginning, was how their big winner would sustain her popularity after the show. Where is the usual debut album? More importantly, where is she now?

Hence, a change had to be made.

The show’s jump from ABC5 to QTV will definitely do wonders for the show’s popularity. More so, it will do wonders for the erstwhile irrelevance of the latter channel.

The personnel changes though, DOWN RIGHT SUCK.
