Nike Air Raid

For some reason, I can’t find any resource online about my Nike Air Raids (but they do exist). I got them as a gift when I was in 6th grade.

Now that I’m looking at them after more than 10 years, the overall design feels like it was inspired by er.. tires. You’ve got those “Air Raid” prints on the velcro straps, and the soles were obviously made for the outdoor basketball. It would have made a world of difference if the name of the shoe wasn’t printed on the straps as well. The thing I hate about not only these, but all velcro based shoes in general, is that those straps tend to curl up after prolonged usage. These shoes gave way after using them for baseball AND soccer. Not a smart way to prolong basketball shoe life eh? If I had the same shoes today (but without the velcro prints), I’d sure wear them again.

What attracted me to this shoe was that it had two chambers where air could be pumped into (yes, seriously). You could pump air into the cushions near the midsole to provide better fit, or you could also move the switch and direct air into the ankle part of the shoe. Isn’t that cool or what? One thing you’ll notice though, is that the shoe looked heavy — and yeah, it sure was.

Nike Air Force 180

Truth be told, I don’t even recall whatever happened to them. But yeah, aside from the Nike Air Pressure, the Nike Air Force 180 is probably one of the most technologically advanced shoes of its time. Do I consider the shoe a novelty as well like my Reebok Pumps? Well, yeah. Take one look at the basketball shoes that are out in the market and you won’t see anything like this. I think the next wave of basketball shoes after the Force 180 had started to put a premium on weight and comfort.

Regardless, this is still one heck of a release.

Reebok “Twilight Zone” Pumps

What 5th grade kid could have resisted being able to squeeze a ball on his basketball shoe’s tongue, and feel the shoe gently hug his feet before he takes the basketball court. Did it make me jump higher? No. Did it make the shoe more comfortable than the usual basketball shoe? No. But it sure made me feel better about myself at the time. LOL.

I didn’t write about this because of how it changed the way I played. I wrote about this because I still remember the way I treated those things before I slept at night. After careful inspection, I would return each shoe in the box it came in, and placed them beside my pillow before I slept. They were the very first things I looked for when I woke up in the morning too. Pathetic isn’t it? So is this commercial.

Those Reebok Pumps were comfortable, but they did not last very long. In less than 6 months, part of the sole had already given way, and the leather was already starting to peel. Just goes to show novelty doesn’t always mean longevity.

The first ever Nike Air Max

The revolutionary shoe wasn’t even admired because it provided better cushioning or boosted performance. It was coveted because it looked cool. Unfortunately, it also symbolized something I couldn’t have. The thing was just too darn expensive.

No worries though, people weren’t too brand conscious when it came to shoes in the 80′s. Back then, “local” brands such as Grosby and All American were already well patronized (I can’t believe there is no trace of these two online). But these two weren’t as cool as the Alvin Patrimonio endorsed local sneaker brand Kaypee.

After thinking about it this morning, I just realized that every rubber shoe I’ve ever owned had its own story. The ones I can remember are definitely worthy of some online space.

Aside from the self drying jackets and flying skateboards in the 2nd installment, no invention is as iconic as those Nike Air Mc Fly’s. They were so popular, that some guy actually started a petition about it in 2006. Two years hence, and Nike has finally heeded the public’s call.

Let me get this out of the way and say that I have never wanted a pair of sneaks as much as I want this pair right now.

If I had the money to buy these babies, I will not wear them. Hell no I will not use them on the basketball court. I will sleep beside them like I did with my first Reebok Pumps. I would put them in a case, never to be used ever.

Not surprisingly, some vultures have already started reselling their pairs on Ebay. If you’ve got the cash (a lot of it), then go on over to Nike Park at The Fort on July 15, 8:15pm. I don’t have any information on pricing or how many pairs they’ll be selling, but I’m guessing it won’t be a lot.

Since I surely won’t be buying, my only wish is for all pairs to be bought by people who won’t end up reselling them. *Sigh*

If you’re a basketball fan, you should consider yourself lucky. Not because you saw the boring San Antonio Spurs take home the NBA championship two or three too many times. Not because you’re puzzled at how Isaiah continues to ignore the New York faithful’s call for his head. Not even King James’ 25 straight in last year’s playoffs or KB24′s 81 comes close to being in the same breadth of Michael Jordan’s grandiose career.

No matter how big today’s superstars become, they will never be like Mike. That is why (the bold text cannot stress it enough) — you are lucky.

I was browsing through my old things when I came across the box which used to hold my old Nike Air Max 360′s. To the people who know me, you know how much I love running shoes. Let’s just say this uninspired post is for all the people who have have had to say goodbye to a pair of shoes that held any kind of monetary or sentimental value.

Anyway, if anyone from Nike Philippines chances upon this blog, don’t worry, I still patronize your stuff.

My Beloved 360′s
(In Memoriam of my pierced Nike Air Max 360′s)

Last year, I bought 360′s for a grand above my usual budget.
There was something about the sneaks that made me lust for it.

Was it the soles? Maybe.
I would think it was the marketing pitch that got my attention
Haven’t been that excited since Reebok pumps were invented.

When the Shox came out, everybody got excited
Even paid good money for a pair
But found out soon enough it wasn’t what I expected
Found them a bit too heavy for my preference

Didn’t use the 360′s for running at all
All I did was walk around with caution
I was literally walking on (compressed) air
There was no way I was soiling those hundred dollar sneaks

One day at the office, as I was going through the motions
I felt a metal object pierce itself into my kicks.
Did it shake lose? No.
Did it hurt at all? Not even.
Though I wish it did if it meant saving my treasured pair.

All I knew was my shoes had lost their mojo.
As I took out the jammed thumbtack, air began to escape.
The feeling can be likened to getting busted on the second date.

I’ve since sold the unusable kicks
And made a vow never to buy anything with airsoles again
Nothing against the brand with the check
But I just can’t go through the same ordeal ever again
