Yep, call this a link bait if you must. And although I’m open to the idea of having this coming Friday, May 8, declared a holiday, I’m against having Manny Pacquiao’s win as the main reason to do so. I can’t find the official announcement anywhere, but I did find this site that lists all available public holidays throughout the world. It cites the Philippine Star as a source, but I can’t seem to find the link to that news item either.

Sources: The Philippine Star (Manila) and Philippines bank and public holidays (qppstudio.net). In a GMA-7 interview, today, Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao announced that he had received a personal telephone call from Philippines’ President Arroyo (PGMA), who told him that Friday, May 8, 2009, the day he arrives in Manila, had been declared a non-working public holiday.

If the Philippine government wants to get on the good side of the public, they should just shoulder his television rights, and not make the business sector shoulder the burden. While other countries are having economic troubles and flu scares, the Philippines is celebrating because of a boxing match?

I hope all of this is just a big joke.
