PBA to transfer to Studio 23?

PBA on Studio 23

Rumors are circulating that the Philippine Basketball Association may soon find a new home in Studio 23. According to my source, the PBA was no longer happy with ABC 5, and that the transfer is 90% sure to push through. The transfer however, may not happen until after the coming conference.

What implications will this have on the country’s premier pay to play league?

  1. It will fortify Studio 23’s hold on local sports coverage supremacy. More than this however, is the station’s potential to expand its viewership. Expect them to take advantage of the kabarkada moniker to the hilt. We all know how popular basketball is in the country.
  2. More importantly, expect coverage to improve drastically. Better in-game graphics and commentaries (Please get rid of Quinito Henson) are to be expected.
  3. Expect more cross promotional activites. Imagine PBA stars guesting on an episode of The Buzz, Wheel of Fortune, or (ulp!) Maalaala Mo Kaya. Wag naman sana :P

Though league attendance has suffered in previous years, the transfer of the PBA to ABS-CBN may finally give it the marketing push that it sorely needs.

As for Tony Boy Cojuangco and ABC 5? Look at is this way — last time I cheked, he still has Gretchen.

*I got my information from someone who works at one of ABS-CBN’s radio stations.

I hope this materializes. We want to see Sev Sarmenta, Boom Gonzales and TJ Manotoc anchoring the PBA Games again.

We want to see Sev and Quinito Henson doing a PBA game together again.

This is good news! Aside from what you mentioned, the PBA games in the provinces could be aired live (just like when ABS-CBN handled the MBA coverage). This is something ABC has failed to do. More games could be played outside metro manila.

ABS-CBN could also very well handle the maintenance of the PBA website that sucks bigtime. This is a good media package if you ask me.

Agree with you 200% on the PBA website. There is nothing professional about it at all. Mga hayok lang talaga sila sa adsense. As a matter of fact, I will be talking about this in a future post.

With ABC pulling out of the PBA bidding, Studio 23’s chances of getting the PBA telecast are brighter now.

Solar Sports, the other bidder, wants to put the games on RPN-9, which is a sequestered network.

At least with Studio 23 and ABS-CBN, there’s better security for the league.

Channel 2 can even air one game on Sunday nights as part of the package.

it’s really a wise decision. millions of filipinos out there have been airing out their pleas of their inability to watch PBA games because of the limited catchment areas of the previous station that has covered the league’s games last conference. more power to ABS-CBN. it’s really a progress. no one can beat what kapamilyas are capable of doing. :)

    PS. Go ginebra!!!!
