On Philippine/Pinoy Idol
As much as I wanted ABC 5’s attempt to establish itself as one of the “big boys” to succeed (someone really needs to put the two giant networks in their place), things didn’t quite work out the way they wanted it to. One question they should asked themselves from the beginning, was how their big winner would sustain her popularity after the show. Where is the usual debut album? More importantly, where is she now?
Hence, a change had to be made.
The show’s jump from ABC5 to QTV will definitely do wonders for the show’s popularity. More so, it will do wonders for the erstwhile irrelevance of the latter channel.
The personnel changes though, DOWN RIGHT SUCK.
Ogie Alcasid versus Francis Magalona
Might as well start this thing with the only good decision that GMA 7 made regarding the choice of judges. If you followed the first season, the master rapper had nothing else to say except “I like you”, or “You’re good” — comments that anyone of us could have made. What’s worse, the guy was gone for about three weeks because of “other prior committments”. How the hell did they allow that?
With Ogie Alcasid, you get a song writer and producer whose repertoire and experience is far more apt for a competition of this caliber.
Winner: Ogie Alcasid BY FAR
Wyndgard Tracy versus Ryan Cayabyab
From what I know of Wyndgard Tracy, I think we’ll see a lot of uneasy moments during the Philippine Idol. I just hope he gives a lot of valuabe advice to the participants. In other editions, I’ve seen some personalities who try so hard to be the Simon Cowel of their respective editions, and it just ain’t pretty.
About Ryan Cayabyab, all you need to think about is how fast ABS-CBN jumped on the chance to nab him for Pinoy Dream Academy while Philippine Idol was in limbo. There is simply no other guy with the same set of qualifications.
Winner: Ryan Cayabyab
Pilita Corrales versus Jolina Magdangal
Okay, this is where it gets ugly. WHY THEY CHOSE JOLINA TO BE A PART OF THIS GROUP IS BEYOND ME. What the F. Again, What the F. I just can’t stress this enough. W-H-A-T T-H-E F.
Other than look like a 15 year-old even though she’s already in her 30’s, there’s just nothing there talent wise. Has she won any awards because of her singing? Has she done anything for the field that is worth noting? Her selection alone is enough to taint the prestige of the franchise, and you will hear a lot of comments like this as the show progresses.
With Pilita, other than her successful career as a musician locally and internationally, her participation in the first installment of the idol franchise didn’t impress either. All she did was blurt out one cliche-ish suggestion after another. Still, I think she could have come back stronger had she come onboard for the second season.
Winner: W-T-F
Ryan Agoncillo versus Raymond Gutierrez
Isa pa toh. This selection is nothing but a confirmation of how politics can exist within one of the country’s biggest networks. What did the guy/gay do to merit a project as big as this? His brother is the station’s most bankable actor? Believe it. Someone in the mold of Paolo Bediones or Mo Twister (ulp), would have been better choices. I read though that you can’t be the host if you’re over 30. But still…
Ryan Agoncillo I think, was Philippine Idol’s prime mover. He also had the Ryan Seacrest factor going for him, and had an easy time connecting with the audience and participants.
Winner: Ray… Ulul. Ryan Agoncillo man.
Will Pinoy Idol succeed? In a nutshell, yes. We all know how crazy Filipinos are with singing competitions. Just expect the personnel changes to catch the ire of the more critical viewing public. One can only hope some changes are made before the show starts.
PS. Jolina Magdangal? W-T-F.

kung comparison yeah, talagang walang sinabi si francis kay ogie but seriously speaking…
ogie sucks too. have you heard his rendition of “you changed my life in a moment?” God… disastrous. they (with fremantle) criticized abc 5 so much pero wala namn pala silang ipapakitang something new or should i say na di rin naman pala sila magaling? lalo na yung sound tech, very amateur. parang pang baranggay lang yung tunog.
anyways, cool post. ^_^
