The Beginning of the End for HD-DVD
If you’re one of the many who bought an LCD or Plasma television during the holidays, then you’ve probably heard about Warner’s recent decision to use the Blu-Ray format exclusively. It has been a silent battle, but from the looks of things, the HD-DVD format will die even before it hits mainstream.
While I still belong to the can’t-afford-but-aspiring-for-an-LCD-TV category, one can’t help but wonder how is this information relevant for us Filipinos? Take a trip to PinoyDVD, and posts like this are what you’ll find.
Been reading this ever-growing thread since yesterday! Hitting me like a ton of bricks!!! That my first dip in the hi-def world w/a tosh a-3(that has yet to arrive Sad) will soon be over before it begins!!!
I guess the best thing to do in that kind of situation is return the HD-DVD player. A simple solution for the consumer right? What the hell will the DVD players manufacturer do in this kind of situation? “I hate to brake the bad news to you but the whole HD-DVD product line has just been scrapped”. One big W-T-F.
It brings back memories of the old Mini Disc format, which was supposed to “replace” compact discs back in the 90’s. The only difference is that the Mini Disc format died a natural death, being reduced to a mere recording medium more than anything else.
Just imagine the amount of resources that were used to perfect all these formats. Too bad there’s isn’t enough room for all of them.

It’s recommended that pinoys stay away from next-gen DVD until the format wars have been truly settled. Blu-Ray did gain a boost from this, but the DVD Forum probably won’t let HD-DVD die without a fight.
Besides, until the pirates find a way to quickly copy and distribute HD-DVD or Blu-ray discs, the question is moot for most Filipinos.
