Banzai!

Enter a search for the word Trillanes in Google and you’ll come up with around 200,000 results. Isn’t it just great how some people do the stupidest things? Amidst the chaos that happened, I wondered about one thing only.

Greed and Stupidity Rolled Into One

A Birthday Mission Fulfilled

After a month of sporadic efforts to train at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center, occasional battles with a bothersome ankle sprain, and another unexplained foot injury, I’ve finally managed to fulfill my birthday promise – finish the Men’s Health Philippines Urbanathlon.

Diether Ocampo S.U.C.K.S.

I know I’ll be getting a lot of flak for this, but just had to rant about it. If you want a good laugh, just tune in to ABS-CBN after their news program and wait for Diether Ocampo in Princess Sara. His role there is obviously a pathetic attempt to impersonate Johnny Depp in Pirates of Caribean. The guy can’t act for s**t.Things like this just make me feel ashamed to be Filipino.

The Truth About GamesMaster: Part 2

The first step we took before GamesMaster’s launch was to make sure potential retailers knew about the magazine. While the then editorial staff of two was scouring over UK copies, I took it upon myself to visit the most logical place to start spreading the news — Viramall.

Though the then “center of console gaming” is now only a shadow of its former self, the place was a microcosm of the local videogame industry. That same year, promotion of gaming as a sport was started through the Samsung World Cyber Games. There was never a better time to launch a videogame magazine.

And so in August 2003, a month before launch, 100,000 K-zone sized mock GamesMaster magazines were released. 80,000 were inserted in FHM, and the rest was dispersed in different strategic areas. GamesMaster had indeed arrived.

The Free Throw Line

When I used to play inter school ball in high school, I relished going to the free throw line. I loved the feeling of an opposing team’s mob jeering me on as the referee hands me the ball, up until the ball leaves my fingertips. There was never a feeling of doubt after every shot. In my mind, the ball was always going to go in.

A decade hence, I found myself in a different situation.

More International Artists Please

I’ve always believed that fan or not, everytime an international artist comes over, you should jump on the opportunity to watch. I mean, how many times do big name recording superstars ignore negative travel advisories to our country? You know what I mean.

I’m not a big fan of Michael Jackson, but still took the leap and spent 6k to see the child molester (told you I’m not a fan) in hopes of catching him sing Man in the Mirror. After standing through the 2-hour performance without hearing the song however, I can still honestly say that the money was well spent. Think Gary V then multiply by a hundred when it comes to production value. Hey, if your talent can build you your own theme park, then you must really be good.

What I’m trying to say is, if I had 20g’s to spare, or if I were the Prince of Brunei (some people have all the luck), I would definitely go to the open field tomorrow night. Just to see Beyonce dance like a madwoman would be worth the price of admission. Hope she doesn’t do a repeat of what happened in the video below. Then watch how she gets up and continues with the mayhem.

Absolutely priceless. Lucky front row bastards.

Can Japeth Aguilar become the first Filipino NBA player?

japeth aguilar

No need for words. Just look at the progress. Maybe the Pinoy basketball player’s road to the NBA isn’t through the PBA after all. You start from the bottom and work your way up. Good luck Japeth Aguilar!

The Kobe Bryant Manila Experience

Kobe in Manila

Not Shaquille O’neal. Not Dwight Howard. Not even Tracy McGrady matched the euphoria that Kobe Bryant caused when he visited the country last September 5. It was already half past ten on September 4th when a friend gave me a call. I don’t remember the rest of the conversation as the only words that registered were Kobe, and Cuisine. That was probably one of the fastest drives I’ve ever taken.

One thing I know for sure, not even the president could have mobilized me the way the way he did.

The Truth About GamesMaster: Part 1

GamesMaster Magazine Last Issue

Since the season has been all about remembering our loved ones, I feel that it’s about time I offered a personal account of what really happened with GamesMaster Magazine. While there were some curious personalities who offered their opinions here, here, and here, a lot of questions were still left unanswered.

First, let me get into the specifics of why bringing in a foreign gaming magazine became a reality in the Philippines. While Summit Media had K-Zone for young boys, and FHM for the 18 year-old and above, there was a yet untapped market for teen boys.

Sometime in 2002, Mega Magazines launched Forward magazine, with TJ Manotoc at the helm. While it was obviously targeted at male teens, the editorial content and quality left a lot to be desired. After a few issues, it eventually folded. It was then converted into Manual. Why did Forward fail? How many teenage guys do you know who read magazines for fashion advice? To put it more simply, how many high school males do you know who buy magazines on a regular basis?

While the answers to those questions were unfavorable, one thing we did know for sure — the gaming industry was becoming bigger than ever.
